While the Fondation Louis Vuitton imagined by architect Frank Gehry, a figure of contemporary architecture, opened its doors to the public in October 2014, the Centre Pompidou offered a retrospective devoted to the architect’s work from October 8, 2014 to January 26, 2015.
The tour offered an opportunity to discover or re-discover the evolution of the artist’s plastic and architectural language throughout the different periods of his career:
from recycling the materials and simple forms of his early work, to architectural sculptures, artistic and technical feats such as the Gugenheim Museum in Bilbao or the Bronze Whale at Barcelona’s Olympic Port. Work on shapes, materials, light and the quality of space is reflected in the sketches and models presented.
It’s also an opportunity to revisit Sydney Pollack’s 2006 film “Esquisses de Frank Gehry”, in which we discover the artist in his office, and the model-building and CAD work behind his work.
