Contrary to popular belief that cities are devoid of nature, a Cornell University study suggests that they offer unique opportunities for wildlife conservation. Cities provide important connections to nature and habitat for many species. In the United States, 38 threatened or endangered bird species can be found in 81% of urbanized areas. However, it is important to ensure that cities do not become “ecological traps” for wildlife. Citizen science programs like eBird can turn this commitment into real opportunities to advance science and conservation.
